Preparing Agents to Serve and Protect
Traffic Enforcement Agent Training at the NYPD Police Academy

All newly hired NYPD Traffic Enforcement Agents complete a 14-week training program designed to prepare them for their role in promoting traffic safety and supporting the mission of the New York City Police Department.
Training takes place at the NYPD Traffic Enforcement Agent Academy and covers essential topics including New York State Vehicle and Traffic Law, New York City traffic rules and regulations, and NYPD policies and procedures. Recruits receive instruction in traffic control, the proper issuance of summonses, radio communications, report writing, customer service, and conflict de-escalation techniques. The program emphasizes professionalism, ethical conduct, public interaction, and officer safety.
Physical training is an integral part of the academy and focuses on defensive tactics, self-protection, and maintaining the physical readiness required to perform duties in a variety of field conditions.
While recruits are in the Academy, they learn the importance of teamwork, communication, and professionalism as essential skills for NYPD Traffic Enforcement Agents.
Teamwork: NYPD Traffic Enforcement Agents are trained to rely on teamwork to maintain order, support one another, and manage traffic effectively.Communication: Agents learn strong communication skills to give clear directions, de-escalate situations, and interact professionally with the public and fellow officers.Professionalism: Professionalism is emphasized through discipline, accountability, and upholding the standards and values of the NYPD at all times.
Upon successful completion of the 14-week academy, recruits participate in a formal graduation ceremony, signifying their achievement and official appointment as NYPD Traffic Enforcement Agents. Graduates are then assigned to commands throughout New York City, where they begin their service to the public.
